2018 Achievements

Grants

Provided $300,000 in Social Investment Grants in 2018 to eight recipients from across Australia, helping to benefit more than 5,000 people affected by homelessness or domestic abuse. The 2018 recipients were 3Bridges Community, Anglicare WA, Broken to Brilliant, Catholic Care Wilcannia- Forbes, Crepes for Change (Society Melbourne), Hobart City Mission, Hunter Homeless Connect and UnitingCare West.

Ethical procurement

Invested more than $14,000 in Australian B Corps, social enterprise and Indigenous businesses including Corporate Culcha, Charcoal Lane and Wurundjeri Elders.

Equip Resilience Training

Resilience training continues to be rolled out across the business with the program having great success. Survey results show more than 90% of staff sitting in the top two resilience categories.

Indigenous Scholarships

Provided four Indigenous women the opportunity to go onto further study through our Indigenous Scholarship Program totalling $30,000.

University of Technology Sydney

We partnered with the University of Technology Sydney to create the Social Impact Measurement Toolkit launching in early 2019, to assist the 600,000 Australian not-for-profits measure their impact for free.

Rental Affordability Index

The 2018 Rental Affordability Index (RAI) contributed to the growing recognition needed to make renting dignified. The changes to rental legislation in Victoria highlight that more people are talking about rental stability and renters’ rights.

Cultural Awareness Training

A key deliverable of our Reconciliation Action Plan, we have rolled out training on cultural awareness of Indigenous peoples, culture and history through independent, Indigenous owned and operated business Corporate Culcha.

Bendigo Bank House

Opening its doors in 2018, the newest short-term, affordable and subsidised respite accommodation facility at Bendigo Hospital has provided accommodation to more than 50 people from across Australia.

Carbon Neutrality

In 2018 we announced plans to become carbon neutral by 2020. While currently recording our carbon footprint for the previous two years, we are on track to understand our carbon emissions and will be working toward implementing companywide initiatives to reduce these emissions.

New products

We began piloting new products in 2018 including the b-maximised® credit Mastercard® and the Unpack for Good program. Since being piloted, Unpack for Good has had five housing providers from across Australia sign up to the program.

Prime Ministers Sporting Oration

We were proud to be a foundation partner of the inaugural Prime Ministers’ Sporting Oration hosted by the Australian Sports Foundation, where the Hon. Julia Gillard spoke of the importance of sport in promoting good mental health. We will be working with the 490 Bendigo Bank branches and engaging the more than 7,500 Bendigo Bank staff to help fundraise for grassroots sports across Australia.

Churchill Fellowships

We have provided funding for two fellowships that will explore leadership models in the not-for-profit sector and Indigenous organisations. This research will benefit not-for-profits around Australia.

Over the past few years, we have begun to introduce companywide initiatives to ensure we are a sustainable and ethically conscious business.

Over the past few years, we have begun to introduce companywide initiatives to ensure we are a sustainable and ethically conscious business.

Part of that is looking at the impact our activities are having on the world around us and questioning where we can do better. The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals are a globally recognised framework for achieving a more just world, and for us, a useful benchmark against which we can assess our impact.

By integrating the 17 Sustainable Development Goals into our business, we are helping work towards ending all forms of poverty, fighting inequalities, ensuring quality education is available and tackling climate change.

Throughout the 2018 Yearbook the 17 Sustainable Development Goal icons will appear on activities, initiatives and programs related to the relevant Sustainable Development Goal noted at the bottom of the page.

By working together and using the Sustainable Development Goals as a guide, we can build an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for all people while also protecting the planet.

Reconciliation Action Plan

In 2018 we celebrated the first anniversary of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Over the past year we have strengthened our efforts towards achieving meaningful reconciliation and closing the unacceptable gaps faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in health, education and living standards.

This year we were thrilled to announce the first ever recipients of the Indigenous Scholarship Program. These scholarships are designed to assist with the costs of study, including tuition, accommodation expenses and learning materials. This scholarship program forms an important part of our RAP and reflects our passionate commitment to developing training and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. This year the initiative has provided $30,000 of support to four young Indigenous Australian students, and this figure will double to $60,000 in 2019.

A respectful understanding of Indigenous culture and history is pivotal when it comes to promoting reconciliation, and it is a value we actively promote. All our staff have undertaken cultural awareness training and we will be introducing a cultural competency course in 2019. We have also updated our Leave Policy to include ceremonial leave and cultural leave to support employees who are required by Aboriginal traditions or island customs to attend cultural ceremonies. The RAP is embedded in all we do and is championed throughout our organisation.

Throughout the year we have continued to establish and emphasise supplier relationships with Indigenous-owned and orientated businesses. In 2018 we procured over $14,200 worth of goods and services from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses. This year our RAP committee proudly sponsored a number Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events and campaigns, and many of our staff joined local celebrations and ceremonies. Internally, we continue to promote our steadfast commitment to reconciliation and have hosted staff events for NAIDOC and National Reconciliation Weeks. These events not only allow us to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, they also remind us of the importance of fostering meaningful and long-lasting relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.

2. B Corp

Celebrating our third year as a certified B Corporation, we continue to entrench the B Corp ethos into our culture with a specific focus on three key themes via a committee and relevant sub-committees.

2018 saw us launch three sub-committees around three key themes to assist us in meeting relevant benchmarks and continue to maintain our B Corp certification.

The three key themes of specific focus moving forward are: Community — how we engage with and contribute to our community. This is currently carried out in a variety of ways, for example by providing tools to aid not for profits with the work they do or breaking down challenges inhibiting opportunities for our people to volunteer.

People — how we empower and lift our people’s capability to develop both professionally and personally. We currently do this by encouraging participation in online and short form courses from personal development to certificate diploma courses across a multitude of disciplines.

Environment — how we at a granular level make a difference by changing behaviours in our daily lives, for example car-pooling, usage of keep cups, or driving our carbon neutral initiative. We are proud to have collaborated and supported the following B Corps throughout 2018:

Community Sector Banking’s recertification process due to be completed in early 2019 has commenced via the B Lab portal and we expect to see a marked improvement in our benchmark achievement.

3. Carbon Neutrality

In September we announced our plans to become carbon neutral by 2020. This decision to become carbon neutral backs up our belief that business can and should be a force for good, not only for people and communities, but also for the environment.

We have begun meticulously recording our carbon footprint, including business travel, staff travel to and from work, water, utilities, waste, and paper use, to gain an understanding of our outputs over the past two years.

Though still in the early stages, once an understanding of our current outputs is clear we will then proceed to implement company wide initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions and support carbon-reduction projects to offset any unavoidable emissions.

B-Maximised

We have expanded our salary packaging suite with the introduction of the b-maximised® credit Mastercard® for all organisations with Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) status, health promotion charities, public or non-profit hospitals, public ambulance services and FBT rebateable organisations.

The b-maximised card allows staff to access a wide variety of everyday living expenses, including petrol, clothing, school fees, groceries, insurance, electricity/gas bills, phone, internet, travel and much more. The b-maximised card provides staff with a greater financial benefit than our b-packaged® card, because of the way the employer is treated when it comes to claiming GST. The b-maximised card becomes a full salary packaging solution when combined with our b-entertained® card and b-optimised® account.

5. UTS Social Impact Measurement Toolbox

UTS Social Impact Measurement Toolbox

In 2018 we launched a partnership with the University of Technology Sydney to build a free Social Impact Measurement Toolbox for not-for-profits. Measuring impact is becoming increasingly important for the sector to not only strengthen their programs, but also to secure funding.

A 2015 Pro Bono survey of 1,100 people working in the not-for-profit sector found 72% reported increasing their focus and effort on outcomes measurement. However, a survey of 360 people from the sector found 56% assessed their capacity for measurement as ineffective (Good Foundations 2017). A UTS survey of 122 not-forprofit executives found 90% identified the capacity to measure impact as a strategic priority.

Unfortunately, many not-for-profits, particularly small ones, don’t have the internal capacity for impact measurement, nor can they afford the consultancy fees. Small, lean and dynamic not-for-profits often have the greatest impact of all – they know their communities and are closest to those in need. The Social Impact Measurement Toolbox will allow any not-for profit organisation to build their understanding of what to measure and how. It will level the playing field, helping to build a sector where not-for profits are funded on their capacity to make a difference rather than pay consultants.

The Toolbox will be built in consultation with the sector over three years with the first modules available in early 2019. It will include online courses with video, forums, questionnaires, interactive templates and a repository of verifiable and validated measures, housed in an open digital platform. This will allow not-for-profits to design programs according to best practices and their staff to understand their impact.

6. Churchill Fellowships

Churchill Fellowships

Investing in people and strengthening the not-for-profit sector are key priorities of Community Sector Banking. That’s why in 2018 we partnered with the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to sponsor two Churchill Fellowships.

The Fellowships support projects that address challenges Australia is facing right now by recognising experts across fields from education to arts, emergency services to health, and agriculture to sport. Not-for-profit leaders will be able to apply

for opportunity to travel the world for between 4 to 8 weeks to observe leading practice and develop new networks, before bringing their newfound knowledge home to the Australian context. Now, more than ever, there is a need to

identify the issues and challenges facing contemporary and future not-for-profit leaders, including leadership skills that the sector should invest in for success. With an ageing population moving into retirement, new technologies, regulatory changes and changing funding streams, positioning the Australian not-for-profit sector for future success is crucial.

The first fellowship will support the development of leadership skills and people and culture programs so future challenges can be met across the not-for-profit sector. The second fellowship is open for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to explore positive interactions and outcomes between Indigenous peoples and communities and the not-for-profit sector. Applications will open in February 2019.

7. Sponsorships and Partnerships

The key to successfully strengthening both sector and community lies in the value placed in building partnerships with shareholders and stakeholders alike. In 2018 we had many successful sponsorships and partnerships that reflect this key value.

The Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS)

As a long-time shareholder of Community Sector Banking, a strong and enduring partnership has developed between the two organisations over the course of 15 years,. As we to expand our influence across the not-for-profit and community sectors the ACOSS partnership will continue to grow.

The NSW Council of Social Services (NCOSS)

A long-time Community Sector Banking shareholder and critical community-based stakeholder in NSW, we were a major sponsor of 5 conference NCOSS held throughout regional NSW. This not only afforded us the opportunity to promote the community value proposition of community banking, but it also solidified an already strong working partnership.

Yfoundations

Yfoundations, the peak body for youth homelessness in NSW, and Community Sector Banking have had a long and productive partnership. In 2018 the partnership took a further step when we sponsored and hosted the inaugural meeting of Yfoundations’ Homeless Youth Representative body. As the issue of social housing and homelessness become even more prevalent in day to day society, we look forward to building on this important partnership.

The Benevolent Society

In 2018 we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the iconic NSWbased charity The Benevolent Society. The MOU focused on assisting their NDIS contract roll-out via the Bendigo Bank’s Bcause e-commerce platform; examining ways and means of partnership in the social investment space; and looking to work together on like-minded projects in the social policy space.

Pro Bono Australia Pro Bono Australia is Australia’s leading provider of news to the not-for-profit sector. With a joint understanding of the need to address systemic issues in the community, we continue to partner with fellow BCorporation Pro Bono Australia as our key media partner. Our partnership includes monthly editorial coverage, digital advertising, keynote sponsorship of the Impact 25 Awards and joint support in providing resources to the not-for-profit sector.

PowerHousing Australia

Our partnership with PowerHousing Australia (PHA) allows us to collectively focus on solving the affordable housing issue in Australia and support PHA’s members in focusing on the issue at a higher level. In 2018 we were a principal sponsor at the Annual Member Exchange. This includes supporting the Rising Star group of 2018 and the Rising Star Award, in which two winners were able to share the award. Our CEO Andrew Cairns also represented PowerHousing Australia on their US Field Trip in February 2018. We look forward to continuing to strengthen this relationship and working towards solving housing affordability across Australia.

Australian Sporting Foundation

In 2018 we partnered with the Australian Sporting Foundation as a sponsor for their inaugural Prime Ministers Sporting Oration held in Melbourne. The event brings together business leaders, decision makers, philanthropists and influential individuals to educate on the positive impact sport can have on our lives and the need for funding of grassroots sports program. Following this event, Community Sector Banking and Bendigo Bank will be supporting the fundraising efforts of the Australian Sporting Foundation by introducing fundraising tins across all branches to support local grassroots sport.

8. Indigenous Scholorships

Indigenous Scholorships

While the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolling in university is growing, financial difficulty is the most common reason these students might leave their studies. This was a key finding of the Prime Minister’s 2017 Closing the Gap Report. It’s also one of the reasons we established our Indigenous Scholarship Program.

As proud supporters of reconciliation, this was a simple way to provide tangible support for Indigenous students to realise their potential. The first year of our program was overwhelmed with applications from around Australia. $30,000 was made available across three categories to support students studying at either university or TAFE in 2018. Four recipients joined us in Melbourne to celebrate their achievements:

Erica Alchin ($10,000 to study at any Australian university) – Bachelor of Health and Rehabilitation Science at Charles Sturt University (Albury/Wodonga)

Kellie Sampson ($10,000 to study at the University of Wollongong) – Bachelor of Nursing

Mafi Kailahi ($5,000 to study at TAFE) – Diploma in Community Services at TAFE Digital

Kaihla Gibson ($5,000 to study at TAFE) – Diploma in Mental Health at TAFE SA

The program will be expanded and continue in 2019 with more scholarships available across more categories.

9. Social Investment Grants Program

After five years and $850,000 in grants distributed to not-for-profits, our Social Investment Grants Program has shown the power that everyday banking can have.

The Social Investment Grants Program is made possible because of SIDA – the Social Investment Deposit Account, which forms part of the suite of products Community Sector Banking designed to create impact for not-for-profits. Certified by RIAA (Responsible Investment Association Australasia) the account is aimed at community minded individuals and organisations who want their money to do good. The grants program is funded by Community Sector Banking contributing 50% net profit earned on all SIDAs and account holders choosing to donate 50% or 100% of the interest earned on their account. The more Social Investment Deposit Accounts opened, the more money we can invest back into the community.

10. Rental Affordability Index

Rental Affordability Index

Compiled quarterly and released every six months, the Rental Affordability Index (RAI) shows that Australia’s housing affordability crisis isn’t just about house prices

Community Sector Banking, in partnership with SGS Economics & Planning, National Shelter and the Brotherhood of St Laurence, developed and delivered the sixth and seventh RAI in 2018, measuring rents as a proportion of household incomes at a national, regional and local level. The November 2018 RAI found that Hobart is now the most unaffordable city in Australia with households on average incomes experiencing rental stress by paying 30% of their income on rent. The Index indicated that rental stress for pensioners and low-income households is severe noting that 45% of low-income households are experiencing rental stress. The report also found single-parent households to be suffering rental stress, particularly the 89,700 single-mother households and the 50 per cent of those single-mother households earning less than $41,600 per annum.

View the latest RAI report and the interactive map of Australia on our website. The November 2018 release coincided with a panel discussion and exclusive preview of the results. The panel of industry experts, joined by Senators Doug Cameron and Mehreen Faruqi, discussed Australia’s housing affordability crisis, explored policy responses, and discussed funding issues that could potentially address the crisis.

11. Unpack for Good

Unpack for Good

The Unpack for Good program helps community housing residents purchase a home through shared ownership between the resident and their housing provider.

Since being piloted in 2018, five housing providers have signed up to the program to support their residents in achieving the Australian dream: owning a home. We are working with other community housing providers to sign onto the program. The benefits of the program include:

  • Creating pathways to home ownership for residents currently within social or affordable housing
  • Helping housing providers help others; by opening up community housing for those waiting for a place to live

How does the program work?

Residents co-own their home with their housing provider. By sharing ownership, they can buy a home that was otherwise unaffordable.

For example

The resident contributes up to 5% and the housing provider contributes 15% – 40% of the property’s cost. The remaining 75% is a regular home loan.

12. Bendigo Bank House

Bendigo Bank House

Bendigo Bank House, the newest short-term, affordable and subsidised accommodation facility at Bendigo Hospital officially opened its doors on 24 July 2018.

Providing regional patients, their carers and families a private facility that has a homey feel, Bendigo Bank House comprises of 15 rooms that are a combination of 1, 2- and 3-bedroom suites and common areas including a kitchen, lounge, laundry and library facilities giving guests an opportunity to connect and socialise.

Community Sector Banking was honoured to support the coming together of Bendigo Bank company and Community Bank® branches in fundraising to sponsor a suite. Castlemaine, Kyneton, Swan Hill, Cohuna, Kerang, Deniliquin, Echuca and Mildura branches, along with Inglewood & District, Heathcote & District, Rushworth & District, Donald & District, Elmore, Lockington and Rochester Community Bank® branches each sponsored a room in Bendigo Bank House.

Each suite is known by their sponsor branch (e.g. Castlemaine Suite), ensuring that all visitors know the accommodation has been fitted out thanks to the donations, and sincere wishes of good health, from the local community.

13. Transformative Banking

Transformative Banking

As we continue to strengthen both the not-for-profit sector and the community, we are also internally assessing our place within both the finance and not-for-profit sectors.

Over the course of the next one to three years, we will begin a shift from being a socially oriented banking service to a transformative one. Transformative banking is the unique approach of banking for positive impact and working with organisations to bring about positive and lasting change. By moving to become a transformative banking service, Community Sector Banking will be able to offer greater value to the community. We will have the ability to do more through connectedness and application rather than being solely a provider of products, grants and scholarships.

Some of the work we are currently doing, including carbon neutrality and B Corp certification, has allowed us to begin the processes of transitioning to transformative banking. We have also begun to look at the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, as noted throughout this document, to provide us with a globally recognised benchmark of impact and effectiveness.

By demonstrating that Australian financial services can make money work for positive change, we become more than a banking service, we become an important part of the community.

In 2019 we will further explore meaningful impact measurement, moving away from standard forms of measurement such as output, dollar figures and profit.

We will also continue to expand on new technological solutions to support both not-for-profits and Community Sector Banking staff, as demonstrated in the upcoming launch of the Social Impact Measurement Toolkit in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney. Our carbon footprint assessment will be completed in 2019 with a view to implement company wide initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions and support carbon reduction projects to offset any unavoidable emissions. The shift to impact measurement and carbon neutral initiatives will be underpinned by the introduction of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals as an impact measurement benchmark across the business.

We see meaningful partnerships with the sector as a pathway to creating impact and this will continue in 2019. Our partnership with Think Impact continues to explore some of the big questions facing the not-for-profit sector and broader community.

We have also committed to another year partnering with National Shelter, SGS Economics and Planning and the Brotherhood of St. Laurence to deliver the Rental Affordability Index. With a changing environment through regulation and funding models, an opportunity exists to awaken participants at scale and build relationships with organisations to work together who haven’t done so before. For example, bringing together not-for-profits, government, superannuation funds and philanthropists to combat the issues around safe and affordable housing.
