Indigenous Scholarships now open

Indigenous students studying for the first time at an Australian university in 2020 are invited to apply for scholarships to assist with the cost of study.

Australia’s specialist banking service for not-for-profit organisations, Community Sector Banking, is offering four scholarships for 2020 students.

With applications now open, 4 x $10,000 ($5,000 per year for two years) scholarships are available to study at any Australian university.

Now in their third year, the Indigenous Scholarships are designed to help with the cost of study, including course fees, accommodation costs and textbooks.

Community Sector Banking Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cairns, said while there is a growing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolling to study at university, they are more than twice as likely than other domestic students to leave their degrees during their first year.

“Among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who seriously consider leaving university, financial difficulty is the most commonly reported reason (44 per cent),” Mr Cairns said.

“This is why we have committed to providing financial assistance to students while they are studying. For students to leave due to financial hardship is a tragedy. We want to support Indigenous people to reach their study goals and set themselves on a path for a successful career.”

The scholarships are open to students studying in 2020 who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
Applicants will need to demonstrate the extent to which the scholarship would make an impact on their lives, their involvement in the local community, their academic achievement and any need that the scholarship would help them overcome.
Successful recipients will also need to provide evidence of their expenses at the end of each year.

Community Sector Banking’s Indigenous Scholarship Program is administered in partnership with the Community Enterprise Foundation (CEF).

Applications opened on 2 December 2019 and close on 28 January 2020. For more information visit
