Media release: Supporting internet access for Indigenous communities in Cairns
17 Feb 15
Community Sector Banking, Australia’s banking specialist for not-for-profits, has proudly sponsored Ngoonbi Co-Operative Society in Cairns for the purchase of new computers to benefit their local Indigenous community.
In partnership with the local Kuranda Bendigo Bank branch, Community Sector Banking has provided funds for the purchase of new computers to be installed in their office located in Kuranda, QLD. The computers will allow Indigenous people from the local community to access the internet to search for jobs, complete Centrelink applications, complete homework, conduct internet banking and stay connected to family and friends.
With only 63% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households having access to the internet, there is a clear need to close the gap for Indigenous communities in gaining access to the essential services provided online.
