Celebrating NAIDOC Week

What is NAIDOC Week?
Held each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, NAIDOC Week is an Australian observance originally standing for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. Where the committee was once responsible for activities during NAIDOC Week and the acronym has since become the name of the entire week.  NAIDOC is celebrated by Australians from all walks of life, with local community celebrations occurring across the nation.

Each year NAIDOC Week adopts a different theme with 2019 being ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future’, acknowledging that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy.

What are we doing?
In recognition of NAIDOC Week in 2019, Community Sector Banking is holding the second annual Indigenous Scholarship Presentation event at iconic social enterprise restaurant, Charcoal Lane. This event celebrates the immense achievements of our Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who have been awarded scholarships to contribute to their educational future. We welcome you all to this celebratory event, find out more and RSVP.

What can you do?
If you’re not in Melbourne to celebrate with us, you are encouraged to get involved in your own communities whether this be by hosting an event, attending a flag raising ceremony or simply researching the traditional Indigenous owners of your area.
